6. Misc. FTP information
Don't forget, some people cannot FTP to a machine and have to rely
on the FtpServer, so if you mention a program on the net, not only give
the name of the machine it is on, give the directory as well. This will
save users of the server considerable time.
Remember FTP access is a *privilege*, please don't abuse it. Try not
to use it during local 'Prime' time (sorry couldn't help that).
Especially, try not to use international servers, instead try to find
the files you want closer to home.
WHERE DO I FIND PUBLIC DOMAIN MACHINES
If you have nothing specific to download and just want to 'browse' you will
need to know some of the archive PD machines that are available.
There are a few ftp-sites index files that may be of use to you. One has
virtually every FTP site available (ftp-sites by Jon Granrose), and the other
is aimed at Amigas only (use ARCHIE to find a copy of these ftp files) use
search strings of 'amiga' or 'list'. You could also get the FTP-sites-faq from
rtfm.mit.edu in the usenet news.answers directory, or the FTP-Sites.txt file
from info/start on aminet.
BUT I CANNOT DOWNLOAD DIRECT TO MY AMIGA
Some mainframes and most workstations can emulate IBM DOS. If you are lucky
enough to have this facility you can download your files to a DOS 720K format
disk and use an emulator on the Amiga to copy onto an Amigados disk (or direct
into memory). The most common public domain emulator in use seems to be
MessyDos. This is easier to install than older programs like MSH, and is widely
available from PD sources, as well as Aminet. You will, of course, have to
obtain a copy of this in Amiga format to begin with!
