9. Acronyms and Abbreviations.


It is good practice to try and keep postings short. Not only does it help to reduce the amount of time needed to receive mails, and reduce the amount of typing needed, it also means people don`t have to use the long version of commonly used terms. Acronyms are basically shortened versions of phrases, usually consisting of the first letter of each word. Abbreviations are shortened versions of common terms.

Acronyms include:


IYSWIM  If You See What I Mean
RFTM    Read The Flippin' Manual  (The F does have another meaning....)
ROTFL   Roll On The Floor Laughing
AFAIK   As Far As I Know
YMMV    Your Mileage May Vary
AFAIR   As Far As I Recall

Some common abbreviations:



Kb      Kilobyte, 1024 bytes
Mb      Megabyte, 1024 kilobytes
IDE     Integrated Drive Electronics, a type of hard drive interface.
SCSI    Small Computer Systems Interface, for hard drives, CD ROMs etc.
PCMCIA  Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, a standard
        interface for peripherals on a card, incl memory, modems etc.
OCS     Original ChipSet, the first custom chipset for the amiga.
ECS     Enhanced ChipSet, came in with the A500+ and allowed 2Mb chip and some
        new graphics modes. Otherwise the same as OCS.
AGA     Advanced Graphical Architecture. Also known as AA. The new chipset that
        was introduced with the A4000 and A1200.
SIMM    Single Inline Memory Module, a common form of memory. Most amiga cards
        use 72 pin SIMMs. Most PC SIMMs are not amiga compatible.
CPU     Central Processing Unit, the `heart' of any computer. The amiga uses the
        680x0 range of CPUs from Motorola.
